Our Sedation Dentistry Options

patient receiving nitrous oxide sedation

Nitrous Oxide

The lightest sedation available at our office in Cedar City, UT, is nitrous oxide sedation. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a gas patients inhale through a mask placed over the nose. It is usually combined with a local dental anesthetic to eliminate pain. Under laughing gas, you will still be conscious and you will still be able to respond to our dentist. However, you will be relaxed and calm under our care.

Oral Conscious

Oral sedation is another form of conscious sedation. When you choose oral sedation, our dentist will provide you with a prescription for a sedative in pill form. At a set time before your procedure, you will take this prescribed medication to relieve your anxiety. Similar to nitrous oxide, oral sedation does not provide pain relief, so we can combine the oral medication with a local dental anesthetic for your comfort. Oral sedatives can provide minimal or moderate levels of sedation.

Close-up of an IV

Intravenous (IV)

For this type of sedation, the sedative medication is administered through a vein, which allows it to take effect quickly. This method allows our licensed anesthesiologist to adjust the level of sedation throughout the procedure. With IV sedation, you can be placed under moderate or deep sedation. A local anesthetic will likely be applied to help ensure you do not feel pain.

Sedation vs. General Anesthesia

Sedation and general anesthesia (which we do not provide) are frequently confused. Here are the distinctions:

Sedation

Through sedation, the patient is conscious during the entire process. Though you may not remember what happened during the procedure, you are never completely unconscious while sedated. You can respond to the doctor's questions, and you won't need any assistance in breathing.

Anesthesia

With general anesthesia, patients are completely unconscious and unable to respond to external stimuli. Doctors have to monitor the patient's vitals while under anesthesia since they are unconscious. A breathing tube is used to maintain breathing during treatment.

Who Can Receive Sedation?

To undergo dental sedation, you must...be in good health, not be pregnant, and have no history of bad reactions to intended sedative

Who Chooses Sedation Dentistry?

While sedation dentistry may not be suitable for every patient, it can provide significant relief for patients with dental anxiety. Other reasons our dentist may recommend sedation include:

  • Past difficulty feeling numb with local anesthetics
  • Fear of needles
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Complex dental issues
  • A sensitive gag reflex
  • Previous dental experiences
  • Extensive dental work, such as dental implants
  • Difficulty controlling movement

Additionally, patients with arthritis or other conditions that make it difficult to sit still for long periods may be able to improve their dental experience with sedation. However, certain medical conditions may limit your ability to receive sedation. Your medical history can help our dentist select the right method for you.

When Is Sedation Available?

At our practice in Cedar City, we can use sedation during any procedure. Patients who are especially nervous about dentistry may choose to be sedated for basic teeth cleanings. However, our dentist most often uses sedation during more involved treatments like wisdom teeth extractions or dental implant surgery.

How Much Does Sedation Cost?

The cost will vary depending on the sedation method you choose. Most insurance plans do not contribute to the cost of dental sedation. If you are concerned about out-of-pocket costs, our Cedar City, UT, office accepts CareCredit® financing to allow you to make monthly payments. While sedation is an extra cost, the benefits of a relaxing visit to the dentist are well worth it for patients who might otherwise avoid teeth cleanings or other essential care.
